I first met Alain in 2002 by chance. My mother was working in the student services department in a local high school, when she overheard Alain speaking with the guidance counsellor about offering tutoring for maths. I was in my final year of High School and looking for a tutor for my Finite Math course. Alain worked with me over the course of my semester and with his help, I was able to get a better understanding of the curriculum and obtained a final mark of “A”. Alain came to each of our sessions, at the public library, well prepared and always showed a keen interest and professional concern for the success of my studies. Furthermore, he was consistently professional, reliable and polite. It was evident that he possessed a broad knowledge base and was able to teach and explain things in a manner that was easy for me to understand. I contacted Alain, again, in University, for help in Algebra & Calculus. I graduated with an Honours Commerce Degree and am currently employed in a financial position. My two daughters were both tutored by Alain Achkar and the results were amazing! Both were successful in passing the academic maths and sciences to progress on to university. Both girls have now graduated and moved on to Teachers College and intend to utilize Alain’s methods in their own work with students.
Alain is an intelligent, well educated and versatile individual who possesses a real talent for teaching. His teaching methods include: a sense of humor, patience, flexibility, diagnostic ability and reinforcement. He was able to liason with the teachers and effectively teach my girls coping strategies as well as techniques to solve problems. Some of these techniques were then shown to her teacher and incorporated in the classroom for other students who were unable to comprehend the material.
My personal experience with school is that curriculum is “covered” by teachers but understanding it is a different story. The amount of material in the curriculum forces the teachers to move on, often leaving students with a poor foundation in the subject. A tutor, then becomes a vital link in the education system. Students often need the time to review and reinforce concepts so as to get a stronger background in the subject.
Alain is a positive, encouraging, engaging and very, very patient tutor. My youngest has a learning disability and we discussed this prior to his taking her on. He tailored his sessions to suit her needs and made her feel that she could do the academic math she needed for university. He would leave a little homework for her in between sessions so she would stay current with him and she was always thrilled when he would check it and she had done all the steps correctly. Her self esteem grew and she became confident in her math abilities. She has grown a lot as a person and Alain is fondly remembered as her mentor!
I would highly recommend Alain as a tutor. He was with us for a couple of years and we came to know him as a friend and support. He would tutor at our home which meant we didn’t need to drive out during supper times! This was another bonus for us as tired parents.
In closing, the investment you make in your child’s education today is priceless in the future. If your child needs help, get a tutor. If you are looking for a good one, Alain is the best!

At the start of the school year, I sent out an e-mail to a group of potential tutors from a list provided to me by the school. Although most did respond eventually, Alain was the first and able to accommodate us very quickly. My son was attempting to develop his math skills from his experience in the 9th grade applied to the grade 10 academic. He has been able to grasp the material and keep up with the math in the academic stream and recently scored 75 on a test. We have gone from two sessions a week to one, given that my son now feels he has things under control. Alain was true to his word that his goal is to develop the child so that his dependence on the tutoring is diminished over time. We are very pleased with our choice of Alain and what he offers with Tutorics.

Our son, a CEGEP student, has been tutored by Alain Achkar for the past few months and the results have been very positive.
Our son’s understanding in certain computer science related subjects had slipped. This meant that he was not only falling behind in particular subjects, he was also having some overall difficulty connecting subject areas.
Unquestionably, Alain knows the material well and has helped his student to better understand both individual courses and the relationship between the subjects. As important, Alain has a patient and friendly way of imparting his knowledge. Our son looks forward to his sessions with Alain.
With improved understanding has come improved grades, and with improved grades has come more confidence and increased enjoyment at school.
I particularly appreciated Alain keeping the parents informed in an appropriate way. This has allowed a team approach to develop: student, tutor and more involved parents.
I would highly recommend Alain as a tutor. He has a respectful approach to the student which creates an environment leading to improvement, enjoying school and more learning.
